Almost every country in the world is signed up to the used of the International Driving Permit (IDP). Although there are two, so check which one you need.

In the UK, the IDP is easy to get -- take your driving licence, some photos and £5 to a Post Office. It might be a good idea to get several IDPs in case you feel justified in doing a runner at a dodgy "police" stop.

IDPs only last for a year, which is a bit tiresome.
