Without a spiritual fibre to my being it was going to be hard to get to the bottom of why people choose to cleanse their souls (bodies & clothes) in one of the most polluted stretches of river on the planet. Faith is something you have to believe in. The cremation ghats draw a crowd and I sat next to someone who claimed to be a keeper of the eternal flame. The price of suffering the silk shop sales pitch was to see the EF which was some smouldering log in the corner of a small temple. We were barged out of the way by the nephew lugging another smouldering log in (I suspect swiped from a crem. below). The old town is a busy tight market almost traffic (and therefore noise) free.
