The Russians came up trumps and despite the man staring at it for a while which encouraged me to stare at it for a while I now have a Russian visa. Huzzah!
Tomorrow is up early to pack the tent, pick up the Kazakh visa (surely nothing could go wrong?) and head for Tashkent a mere 300+km and an International border crossing away. Noting that if you take the straight road it would be three border crossings and my visas are single entry only. Must turn right...somewhere...
